Since 1962, the LSRO has provided expert evaluation of issues, opportunities, data, programs, and proposals in scientific research and clinical medicine.

Our modern era is a time of great promise, opportunity, and challenge in the biomedical, agricultural, social, and environmental sciences. The conduct and application of science and its place in the fabric of American society have become everyday concerns, and science plays an important role in ensuring U.S. competitiveness in the global marketplace.

We want to know how safe are the foods we eat and the medications we take. We need to understand what determines misconduct in science. We debate whether the contributions of science to the health and welfare of the citizenry justify its cost. We question whether science education is keeping up with changing times.

Research directors and administrators, policymakers, health care professionals, and educators need expert information, analyses, and consultation regarding these and many other questions. The LSRO has carefully built an international reputation for objectivity and confidentiality, and it is widely regarded as an authoritative source of sound scientific information, independent of special interest groups and politics.

LSRO reports are timely, comprehensive, state-of-the-science reviews. Moreover, its experience with regulatory and governmental processes has proven exceptionally useful to clients from the public and private sector alike.

The LSRO serves National Policy Makers and Research Sponsors with studies that provide objective evaluations of available evidence in the areas of nutrition, food, safety, health and the environment. These evaluations are essential for building a solid foundation for decision-making, bringing together all sides of the issues, and identifying emerging areas for future scrutiny.

For Private Sector Sponsors, LSRO reports and workshops gather the best available scientific evidence that is subsequently used to support petitions and submissions.

The services of LSRO encompass comprehensive studies; workshops, conferences, and symposia; peer review; and support services.

The reports and conclusions provided by LSRO are the result of meetings and workshops involving carefully selected experts and consultants. These experts are chosen from among the over 55,000 members of FASEB's twenty professional societies, as well as from a worldwide network developed over the past 35 years. FASEB members are among the most respected and honored group of professionals. Over 135 past and present FASEB members are recipients of the Nobel prize, and approximately 800 are members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences or Institute of Medicine. Outside of FASEB, the LSRO calls on specialists from a variety of disciplines including; education, science administration, regulatory affairs, public health policy, economics, and law.

A Board of Directors provides oversight and guidance, reviews all expert panels, reports and contracts.

LSRO's scientific foundation is strengthened by its relationships with the LSRO Member Societies. Member Societies nominate directors to the LSRO Board of Directors, provide connections to their membership, and identify areas of interest for LSRO participation.
