Differentiating the Health Risks of
Categories of Tobacco Products Project Description

The Life Sciences Research Office (LSRO) has undertaken a project (Differentiating Tobacco Risks/ DTR) to provide an independent, comprehensive evaluation of the science base necessary to determine if there is sufficient scientific evidence to characterize (1) the relative risks of using smokeless tobacco products compared to cigarette smoking and (2) the relative risks posed to users of various categories of smokeless tobacco products.

Philip Morris USA is providing the funds necessary to complete this project, but will provide no input into the design or implementation of the study or the final recommendations.

	Third Panel Meeting Convened The third and final Expert Panel meeting was held February 20-21, 2008 at the FASEB campus, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD. For more information, click here.
	Anticipated Report Release Date - Summer 2008 This report will provide an independent, comprehensive evaluation of the sufficiency of scientific evidence to characterize the relative risk of using smokeless tobacco products compared to smoking conventional cigarettes. The report will identify the characteristics of smokeless tobacco products that are important for assessing risk and, if the science base is adequate, stratify categories of smokeless tobacco products on the basis of the risk.
	New Project Management Dr. Kara Lewis is the new Project Director. She succeeds Dr. Dan Byrd, who is retiring from LSRO.
