A Workshop on
Assessing the Environment
for Regulatory Change for
EPA and DHA Nutrition Labeling
The Life Sciences Research Office, Inc. (LSRO) is organizing a Workshop to engage the scientific community in a debate with experts from government, academia, and industry to identify issues involved in establishing a Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) and listings on the nutrition fact panel for EPA and DHA. This workshop is sponsored by Global Organization for EPA and DHA (GOED), a trade association with a mission to promote the use of EPA and DHA.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that are formed in varying amounts in animal tissues, especially fatty fish. EPA is the precursor of n-3 eicosanoids that have been implicated in preventing coronary heart disease, arrhythmias, and thrombosis.

The purpose of the Workshop is:

To bring together medical and nutrition science professionals with interests in national nutrition policy to address:
  The process by which RDI allowances and the nutrition fact panel are set;
  The type of information needed to support a change in a RDI and/or the nutrition fact panel;
  The role of RDI allowances in attaining national health goals (i.e., adequate intake to prevent deficiency versus prevention of chronic disease); and
  The roles EPA and DHA may play in attaining national health goals.
To provide an opportunity for interaction and debate between government scientists, academic researchers, industry, and consumer advocates.
To disseminate the findings of the Workshop to key opinion leaders and other parties who share a mutual interest in the setting of RDI allowances.
